Many ancient calendars counted months by the moon while tying festivals to the agricultural year. Those two cycles do not divide evenly, and the resulting mismatch required deliberate correction.

The moon is an obvious but awkward clock

A lunar month is easy to observe. Anyone can see the crescent return, so a month needs no instruments, no records and no central authority to be counted.

Twelve such months fall short of a solar year by roughly eleven days. A purely lunar calendar therefore slides backwards through the seasons, completing a full circuit in about three decades.

For societies whose rituals marked sowing, harvest or the flooding of a river, that drift was unacceptable. A harvest festival cannot wander into midwinter.

Intercalation was the standard repair

The common solution was to insert an extra month at intervals, pushing the calendar back into alignment with the sun.

Early systems did this by observation and decision. Officials or priests judged whether the crops or the stars were ready, and announced an additional month when they were not.

Later systems fixed the pattern in advance, distributing seven extra months across a nineteen-year cycle. That arrangement keeps lunar months and solar years in step closely enough for practical use.

Some traditions declined to correct the drift

The Islamic calendar is strictly lunar and does not intercalate, so its months move steadily through the seasons across a worshipper's lifetime.

The effect is deliberate. Fasting in Ramadan falls in every season in turn, and the observance is not tied to any particular agricultural or climatic moment.

That choice trades seasonal anchoring for uniformity. Every community observes the same month regardless of latitude or local farming cycle.

Fixing the new month required a rule

A month beginning at first visible crescent depends on weather, eyesight and horizon, so neighbouring communities could easily start on different days.

Some traditions resolved this by calculation, defining the month arithmetically so that dates could be known far ahead. Others retained sighting, treating the observation itself as part of the practice.

The disagreement is not merely technical. It concerns whether a religious date rests on witnessed evidence or on an agreed reckoning, and both positions remain live.

The inherited arrangements still govern festival dates

Movable feasts in several traditions move because a lunar reckoning sits underneath a solar calendar, and the two are reconciled by rules set down long ago.

Regional variation persists where different reconciliation schemes were adopted. Communities using distinct intercalation rules can observe the same festival weeks apart.

Understanding a festival's date usually means understanding which correction its calendar applies, rather than treating the date as arbitrary tradition.
